So I think it’s safe to assume that you want to be a successful person, right? In this blog post I outline 12 qualities of highly successful people and how you can model them to develop and grow you personally and your business.
If you are not currently applying any of these qualities, start applying them right now. Once you’ve developed these qualities, it will be nearly impossible not to be successful.
1. Understand What They Want and Why
Highly successful people have a deep understanding of what they want and why. This is where being very clear on your “why” is important.
If you don’t know what you want or why you are in a business, you will take your foot off the gas pedal and slow it down until eventually you end up at Failure, population 1,000,000,001.
Knowing your why keeps you super focused.
You may have noticed that as you are building your business you’ve hit a few rough patches.
Every day is like riding on a roller coaster. There’s ups and downs and twists and turns. If you don’t know what you want and why, you will quit on yourself. We see it in the business world all the time.
Your goals and dreams (your why) will pull you through the rough patches. They will keep you going. If your dream or why is not enough to drive you, pull you, push you through, then dream bigger!
So how do you stay focused on what you want and why? Practice visualization. I’m serious. Sit quietly for 10 minutes and “see” yourself achieving what you really want.
- See yourself in that position, in that dream, in that win
- See the bank account numbers, feel the emotion of looking at those numbers
- See your house, your car, your clothes, smell the new car smell
- See yourself on stage, hear the applause
See it, feel it, live it for 10 minutes every single morning.
Taking it a step further, visualization throughout the day will fuel your actions and drive your day forward as well.
Highly successful people develop an “I don’t care what anyone else thinks” attitude.
If you have big dreams, you are going to come up against resistance from friends and family. They’re going to start telling you:
- you’re crazy
- you’ll never achieve it
- you’ll never be successful; people like you never are
- it’s too big of a goal
- you’re obsessed
Well guess what. What they think should not stop you from achieving your dreams.
Listen, we all grow with up limiting beliefs put on us by our family and society, the beliefs of what’s acceptable and what’s not.
The belief that starting a business is not for everyone and is too difficult to achieve.
The belief that the only way you can truly be successful is to go to college, work in a career for 40 years, and retire.
Unfortunately, gone are the days that life is feasible. There are no more pension plans, most of the companies don’t even have retirement savings for their employees.
We don’t work for the same company for 30 years. Heck, we can’t even provide adequately for our family working 9 to 5.
It still amazes me that these are still our beliefs. The Millennial generation already understands the bigger picture when it comes to the entrepreneurial life. We should learn a thing or two from them.
People who don't understand this kind of life call the Millennial generation lazy, unfocused, unmotivated, not driven. Mark my words. There will be more Millennials who are successful entrepreneurs than all the other generations combined.
Why do I say that? Because they already know what they want. The Millennials I know are willing to work hard to achieve that dream and are driven to achieve it more than anyone else.
We know we have jobs, careers, experience, or family to fall back on. They don't want that job or career. They want freedom, the freedom to live their lives the way they want to.
They are hustlers (not the bad kind), and it's the hustlers who play the game and win.
So if you are not meeting resistance with family or friends, unless they are just super supportive of everything crazy you do, then your goal just isn’t big enough. You need a bigger dream.
You need to be hearing people say, “Oh my God. What are you doing?”
When you drop your ego, when you get to a place where you no longer care what your friends and family think, and you know you’re a good person, you become unstoppable.

Highly successful people develop a “no matter what” kind of commitment.
“No matter what, I am not quitting." "It doesn’t matter if I have to do this alone. I’m not quitting." "I can’t live like this anymore. I’m going to succeed no matter what.”
Way too many people say “I’ll try it” or “I’ll give it a shot.” They never make it. Why? Because of their attitude. Because they are holding back due to lack of trust or lack of confidence in themselves.
Those you hear saying “I’m going to do it no matter what. I don’t care what happens. I’m not stopping” are the people who become highly successful.
It is going to take persistence, consistency and patience. So you have to be determined. You must make it very clear to yourself and everyone else you’re doing this.
When people say to you, “You’re obsessed. You need to take a vacation. Just take a day off,” that’s when you know you’re on the right track, especially in the beginning. Take that as a huge compliment because that says something about your focus and commitment to yourself.
Get rid of the start and stop mentality as well.
Working hard for a couple of weeks, then taking a few days off, then working for another 3 days, and then taking 2 days off is not a commitment. This will in and of itself prevent you from being successful.
What ends up happening is you gain momentum and lose momentum. Each time you stop and then start again is like starting from day one. Don’t do that to yourself and your business. Keep going no matter what.
Highly successful people have a deep belief in themselves. If you do not believe 1000% that you will succeed…
- You fail
- You will quit on yourself
- You will lose momentum
- You will find excuses
- You will prove everyone else right and even deepen that disbelief in yourself.
So what if you don’t have a strong belief in yourself? Change your mindset. Find personal development/mindset leaders to follow. Read books, listen to audio, watch videos. Do anything you can to start to reprogram the way you think and what you say to yourself.
You can reprogram your brain from the “I don’t know if I can do this” to the “I am going to do this and be successful.”
Improving your mindset and changing your thought pattern will change your life.

5. Act As If
If you want to be a highly successful person, you must act as if you are already the person you want to become. This is quite different than the “fake it until you make it” mantra you hear in business.
When you’re faking it, you’re pretending, lying. “Acting as if” is kind of pretending, but it’s more like you’re stepping into the shoes of a leader right now.
You are making the decisions like a highly successful person would make.
You are training people and leading people the way a highly successful person does.
You are calling your leads like a highly successful person does.
You’re making videos every day the way highly successful people do.
You are living it, breathing it, becoming it.
Too many people make the mistake of waiting to “be” a leader until they have the results to back it up. There’s nothing to stop you right now from being the leader you want to be. Just do it.
Do what they do, think how they think, speak how they speak, learn how they learn.
The more you live in it, the more the confidence and the posture grows. The more the confidence and posture grows, the faster your results will too.
Think about it.
If you are on the phone talking to a prospect or potential customer and you don’t have the confidence yet or you believe you haven’t had the success yet, you will not get that sale.
If you have the posture and confidence, you project that kind of energy and they will join you.
If you are scared, do it anyway. Force yourself until it becomes no big deal. That’s when the power comes.
6. Communication Skills
Highly successful people have high communication skills and solid speaking skills.
Communication skills are the most important skills to have in life in general.
If you are in network marketing, you know this is a relationship industry. You must master small talk.
If you’re not good at small talk, practice practice practice with everybody: family, friends, neighbors, doctors, nurses, and the general public you meet on the street or standing in the grocery aisle.
Honing your skills at small talk leads to building rapport. The better you are at building rapport, the faster you will close the deal. So it is worth your time to become a master rapport builder.
Every top leader in the industry is a master communicator.
Every highly successful person has an ability to empathize with people and has developed the ability to read people.
If you’re having the conversation with someone, listen to what they’re telling you. If they’re hurting, they have a pain. Just talk to them about it.
Be a human being and talk to them like they are a human being and not just a number.
They have dreams, desires, and crappy stuff going on. Show empathy and you will be able to help this person.
Also, being able to read people is an important skill that develops with the ability to empathize with people. It’s not what people say. You must be able to read between the lines, to be able to pick up on someone’s feelings even in a Facebook chat.
This is the best skill in the world to have.

8. Learn, Learn, Learn
Highly successful people have a burning desire to:
- always get better
- always be learning
- develop their skillsets
- always be growing.
A true entrepreneur has a fear of stagnation. They are not satisfied with just $10,000 a month or $20,000 a month or whatever the number is.
You will always hear a successful entrepreneur say, “I was stuck at making $25,000 a month. I couldn’t get past that number. I was getting frustrated.” Normal people think, “Wow, wish I had that problem.”
But highly successful people want to grow themselves and their business every single day no matter how much money they are making.
So how do you grow? You learn. You keep learning. Things are changing all the time. There is always something new to learn.
9. Choosy of Their Friends
Highly successful people choose those they surround themselves with very carefully.
You must be especially choosy about your circle of influence. I’m sure you’ve heard the general rule of thumb is you will earn the average wage of your closest 5 friends. Look at who your friends are and tell me that’s not true.
What we’re talking more about right now is attitude.
Are they supportive, positive, people that are going places, on the rise OR are they saying you’re wasting your time, you’re never going to make money, you’re crazy if you think this will work?
It doesn’t matter if they are friends or family or a mixture. If that’s the general attitude you are surrounding yourself with, you will quit on yourself.
Attitudes rub off on you faster than you realize.
Test this out. If your spouse or significant other came home right now in a bad mood, how long before you are in a bad mood too? If they walk in the door singing and whistling and you are in a crappy mood, see how fast your mood changes.
If you are surrounding yourself with negative people who are always bringing you down, you need to limit the time you spend with them.
Surround yourself with positive people.
I learned this firsthand without even realizing it. I surrounded myself with people who complained about everything. We were a bunch of “negative nellys”.
One day I chose to do something they didn’t approve of and they promptly stopped talking to me. It hurt for a while until I realized I hadn’t been so negative. I was starting to feel pretty happy.
It wasn’t until Mark pointed out to me that their influence over my attitude was gone. That’s when I realized the power of this general rule.
You have a choice, so choose carefully.
People will get in your head, good or bad. If you surround yourself with positive people, it’s an amazing thing. Allow someone with great positive energy into your head.

Highly successful people are willing to adapt to any change.
To acquire great success, you must be flexible when things change because they are always changing when you’re an entrepreneur.
If your business is online, things change even faster. Algorithms change, rules change, social media changes, what’s acceptable changes.
You must be adaptable. This is literally a survival of the fittest. You must be able to adapt to the changes.
You want to grow an email list. These are people who have raised their hand and said they wanted to learn more about you and your business and products. Trust me, you want an email list.
I’ve had 6 YouTube accounts shut down.
Facebook could decide one day they were closing up shop. Twitter could be bought out and shut down without any warning. LinkedIn could say they only want "real" career people and job seekers on their platform.
Or, worse yet, they could shut you down.
Unfortunately, most people will lose their businesses if Facebook shut them down.
Don't be that person. Don't have all your eggs in one basket.
A true entrepreneur doesn’t expect things to go their way.
There are always bumps in the road. It’s just part of being an entrepreneur. It’s a roller coaster and that’s just part of life.
Highly successful people have integrity.
If you’re not being honest, you will be discovered.
- “I’m making all this money…"
- "You’ll make 10,000 in 7 days…"
- "This is the easiest business in the world…"
- "All you need is two people…”
The best way to lose any kind of credibility or authority is to be one of those people.
What do you think would happen if you brought somebody into your business and they found out pretty quickly you’ve been lying about your claims?
Be honest and transparent with people. It’s the best thing we can do.
This industry has a bad rep because of all the dishonest people. At the end of the day, all we have is our integrity.
Highly successful people have a heart full of gratitude.
When you express gratitude for what you have, no matter how small or how big, you attract numerous things to be grateful for. That is the Law of Attraction.
If you’re not going to appreciate what you have, the universe will give it to someone else who will. Show gratitude and more things will come your way.
This one was near and dear to my heart.
December 30, 2015, I decided I was going to keep a gratitude journal for one year. The two rules I set for myself were:
- I had to write at least 2 to 3 things every single day, no exception
- None of them could repeat.
On December 30, 2016, I had over 1,000 things in my gratitude journal!
Today February 2018 I have over 2,500 things in my gratitude journal. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger, not because I've kept it up for over 2 years but because I see more things each day that I'm grateful for.
I have learned this lesson well. The more gratitude you have in your heart, the more you see and the more you receive.
Each morning I start writing my gratitude journal of each thing I am grateful for from the day before. It is an excellent way to start your day off on a positive note. It really does make a world of a difference.
Some of us may not believe this, but we have control over our lives and our success to a really high degree.
You have the power to create exactly what you want, so exercise it. Be the driver of your own destiny, not just the passenger. It’s up to us to act on it.
If you have a purpose, it’s your choice to fulfill that. If you are not pursuing it, you are doing you and the world a huge disservice. It’s up to you to make it happen.
Find a way to implement each of these qualities. Be consistent and you have no choice but to find success.
